A glossary of terms used in xapiapps and the xAPI world.


Administrator: The person managing xapiapps. They have the most permissions in xapiapps such that they are able to create, view, modify, delete, sign off and perform tasks.

Agenda: A set of topics to be covered during a Group Training session. An agenda is required to be attached to a Group Training session to begin one.

Coach: The person in charge of coaching a user through a coaching checklist using the Coach app. They should be given the observer role.

Coach Checklist: Used interchangeably with Coaching and Coach. A checklist that can be used for face-to-face training / learning where a coach is required to cover a set of topics with the trainee / learner. An app by xapiapps. Install the Coach app to use this feature.

eLearning: Learning by electronic devices. eLearning in xapiapps typically means it was created by an eLearning content creator tool such as Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Lectora, Composica, Elucidat etc... and has been packaged as a SCORM content or a Tin Can API /xAPI content.

Group Training: Formerly known as attendance. Group training keeps track of who attended an event and at which point they arrived or left during the group training session. An app by xapiapps. Install the Group Training app to use this feature.

Learner: Used interchangeably with Trainee. The end user of xapiapps whose main purpose in xapiapps is to complete tasks and accumulate skills. A user who is given the Trainee role.

Learning Experience Builder: The heart of xapiapps, and the future of creating adaptive learning experiences. Learning Experience Builder is used to connect various content from different apps to create a tailored learning experience for users. These pathways can branch to add user both successful and unsuccessful scenarios and add delays in between tasks.

Learning Locker: A Learning Record Store (LRS) provider. See Learning Locker.

Learning Record Store (LRS): A place where xAPI statements are sent to be collated and analysed for data-driven training.

Manager with reports: A role in xapiapps where the person can only see people / learners that report to them.

Observation Checklist: A checklists that can be used to observe a trainee / learner perform a set of criterias. Useful for compliance training. An app by xapiapps. Install the Observation Checklist app to use this feature.

Observer: The person in charge of observing a user via an observation checklist using the Observation Checklist app. They should be given the observer role.

SCORM: The old eLearning standard. The most commonly used standards are SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004. We encourage you to move eLearning content to use the modern Tin Can API / xAPI eLearning standard.

SCORM Cloud: The most robust SCORM delivery tool created by the people who developed the SCORM standard. Don't be fooled by it's name, it can also deliver Tin Can API/ xAPI content. It can send xAPI statements for SCORM content. SCORM Cloud also have their own LRS.

Self Assessments: A series of questions that trainees / learners are required to respond to. Useful for creating quizzes or surveys. An app by xapiapps. Install the Self Assessment app to use this feature.

Supervisor: The term used in xapiapps to refer to both an observer or a coach.

Tin Can API: Used interchangeably with xAPI. The new improved modern eLearning standard.

Trainee: Used interchangeably with Learner. The end user of xapiapps whose main purpose in xapiapps is to complete tasks and accumulate skills. A user who is given the Learner role.

Training Evidence Systems (TES): The owners of xapiapps.

Watershed LRS: A Learning Record Store (LRS) provider.

Wax LRS: A Learning Record Store (LRS) provider created by Saltbox.

xAPI: Also called Experience API. Used interchangeably with Tin Can API. The new improved modern eLearning standard.

xapiapps: Pronounced as zappy - apps. A web app software to make xAPI simple. The center hub to connect various training and learning apps and send xAPI statements.

xAPI Statements: A phrase made up of an Actor, a Verb, and an Object (e.g. "Sally" "Read" "Getting Started with xapiapps") that can be sent to an LRS where it can be used to analyse learning / training data. Don't worry, xapiapps takes care of xAPI statements for you, and sends them to your desired LRS .
